Planetes (2003) is an award-winning science fiction series, known for its realism, character-driven stories, and political/sociological themes.
Most anime SF tends to be Space Opera– war stories, westerns, or other genres transplanted to a space setting. Planetes is more Hard-SF– making the science and tech plausible and give some thought to what effects that tech might have on human lives
The story ceners around Ai Tanabe, a young woman beginning her career in space with the Technora corporation. She’s assigned to the Debris Section, in charge of disposing of space junk. Even though this is a vital task, the department is looked down on and has been a dumping ground for misfits and people who lost the game of office politics.
In addition to getting the job done in a dangerous environment, political and societal conflicts on Earth are reflected in space. The other cast member have their own stories and challenges too.
