Noir (2001) features a pair of female assassins- Mireille, a fashionable Corsican living in Paris, and Kirika, a Japanese teen with fearsome firearm skills and no memory of her past life.
Connected by the word “Noir” and a pocketwatch from Mireille’s past that plays a haunting tune, the two team up to solve shared mysteries in their past, and take assassination commissions.
Noir marked a turning point in the “Girls with Guns” genre. Older series combined Action/Adventure with comedy, but Noir emphasized drama and mystery.
One of the ironies of this genre is the obsessively accurate depiction of firearms, despite guns being inaccessible in Japan. For instance, here’s their reference for Kirika disassembling her Beretta M1934:
